Thank you, Madam President,
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the United Kingdom as penholder for its efforts during the negotiations, and to the other Council members for their commitment. I would also like to welcome the representatives of Somalia and Ethiopia.
Switzerland voted in favour of this resolution and welcomes its adoption. The authorization of AUSSOM is essential to consolidate the progress made in Somalia.
The resolution that has just been adopted clearly underlines the protection of civilians as a priority of AUSSOM's mandate. In this respect, we insist on the full respect of international humanitarian law and human rights by all parties. The resolution also emphasizes compliance with standards of conduct, dis-cipline and accountability. These are the basic principles that we have defended on many occasions within this Council, including during these negotiations.
We also welcome the fact that the resolution sets out a clear path towards predictable and sustainable funding for AUSSOM through a ‘hybrid’ implementation of Resolution 2719. It is crucial that the neces-sary preparations be undertaken by the UN and the African Union as soon as possible to enable the Council to confirm this implementation as of 1 July 2025.
Madam President,
We hope that the transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM will contribute to a lasting and inclusive peace in Somalia and enable it to ensure its own security. I would also like to pay tribute to all members of ATMIS for their commitment over the years. In this sense, I reaffirm our full support to Somalia and its people. We will remain committed to working with them beyond our mandate in the Council to build a lasting peace and a prosperous future.
I thank you.
