The number of women Permanent Representatives at the UN, particularly on the Security Council, has been historically low. The first woman to officially serve on the Council was not appointed until 1972. From 1990 to 2022, they made up only 8% of the total in the Security Council.
During Switzerland's 2023-2024 mandate, there were 5 women Permanent Representatives in the Council, representing one-third of the total.
